BROWN STONE FRONT CAKE
Mix and let stand:
2 ˝ (1 ounce) squares of chocolate, melted
1 tablespoon baking soda
˝ cup of hot water
Other Ingredients:
˝ cup of shortening (butter)
2 cups of white sugar
2 eggs, well beaten
2 ˝ cups of cake flour
1 cup of buttermilk
˝ teaspoon of salt
2 teaspoons of vanilla
Cream butter and sugar
Add flour and milk to creamed mixture (alternate/mix: A little bit of milk, a little bit of flour)
Add eggs
Add the chocolate mixture and the 2 teaspoons of vanilla
Bake in a 350 degree oven for about 30 minutes.
Top with chocolate fudge frosting.
The actual recipe was written on a piece of paper about 90 years ago by my grandmother. The directions actually say bake slow and a pinch of salt.
AUNT RAE'S APPLE PUDDING
Ingredients:
1 cup of sugar
1 cup of flour
1 tablespoon of butter
1 tablespoon of milk
1 egg
1 teaspoon of cinnamon
1 teaspoon of nutmeg
2 cups of chopped apples
˝ teaspoon of salt
1 teaspoon of baking soda
Directions:
Cream butter and sugar
Combine dry ingredients
Add egg and milk to butter sugar mixture
Add the apples to the dry indgredients, mix
Combine dry and wet ingredients
Pour into a 9" greased pan.
Bake in a 350 degree oven for about 30 minutes. It will pull away from the sides when finished.
Top with whip cream.
I experimented by replacing the apples with bananas and substituting 1 cup of brown sugar for the sugar and 1 teaspoon of brandy extract for the cinnamon and nutmeg. Pretty good.

TURNIP AND BROCCOLI SOUP
Ingredients:
1/4 cup of diced green pepper
1/2 cup of diced turnip
3/4 cup of chopped broccoli stems
2 chopped green onions
2 gloves of chopped garlic
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 tablespoon butter
2 cups of water
2 chicken bouillon cubes
1/2 teaspoon of dill
1/2 teaspoon of cayenne pepper
Salt and pepper to taste
Directions:
Roast peppers in dry pan, mediou high, until skin is almost black
Add butter
Add onions and garlic
Sauté for about 3 minutes until garlic is light golden, not burnt.
Add turniips and mix
Add water, red pepper, a little salt, and the nutmeg.
Bring to a boil.
Add bouillon cubes.
Reduce heat and simmer for about 12 minutes.
Add the broccoli and simmer forabout 8 minutes.
Add the dill.
Salt and pepper to taste.
