The League of Women Voters of Kansas

Please limit each answer to 75 words or less.

1. What two areas of expertise will you bring to the Congress?

Budget Management and Farming. I spent 26 years with the Boeing Company as an Industrial Engineer in the Finance, Budgets, and Operations sections. Fiscal Responsibility is something that most of us know about. We pay our bills and live within our means. The Federal Government hasn't a clue where the money goes. The Government and our politicians should be held accountable.

I have owned and operated a farm for the past 18 years.

2. Welfare Reform has reduced the number of people on welfare by more than 50% but has reduced poverty among welfare clients by only one to three percent. What additional modifications would you propose to further reduce poverty among former welfare recipients and among the working poor?

I do not agree with the numbers. The Republicans have subsidized Welfare Programs with more money than any Democratic Congress in previous years.

Welfare recipients receive 28 cents of every welfare dollar collected. Trillions of dollars have been collected.

Welfare has created dependency and slum housing. Modify it? No, I want to eliminate it. Lower taxes and jobs will reduce poverty. Jobs come from the private sector, not government. My goal is to elevate people.

3. What positive and negative impacts will the recently signed Farm Bill have on large and small Kansas farmers?

The new Farm Bill is Farm Welfare. I endorsed the 1996 Farm Bill. Subsequent legislation has made it a disaster and put subsidies at a 60 year high. The bill will have a negative impact on small and large farms. It will contribute to lower prices and increase the demand for subsidies. The new Farm Bill caps the amount large farms can receive. Farming is a risky business. I believe in the Market economy.

4. How would you strike a balance between preserving our environment and meeting the increased demand for our natural resources, such as oil?

Capitalism and Environmentalism are not a paradox. They can work together to solve problems. Re-organize the environmental agencies. Put field agents in the States to work with businesses and people.

A non-polluting turbine powered car, gasoline not required, was available from the Chrysler Corporation more than 40 years ago. This type of vehicle almost won the Indy 500. Where is it now? Why? We can reduce our dependence on oil with innovation and less politics.
