MR SCIENCE GOES TO BURNING MAN '01

Some pictures and thoughts from 2001. Also, note the Ice Tales at bottom of pages.

The official burning man page is at www.burningman.com. Previously I have used the metaphor of visiting an alien world to describe Burning Man, but this year magic seems more appropriate; visiting the realm of the Sidhe, for instance.

THE MAN AT DUSK

This year a snorkel lift was required to work on the man due to the new larger base design.

BLACK ROCK CITY FROM THE ZIGGURAT

The emphemeral and endlessly recreated city.

MOONRISE

The full moon was lovely this year.

The Ice Tales: I've been an ice volunteer for the last 3 years, and we have a good time while moving tons of ice. Ice Tale No. 1: Despite our prominent sign offering ice for $2 a bag, the huge igloo shaped dome where we sell ice, and the stream of people carrying ice away, we often get questions like this:

Q: Do you sell ice here? A: No, we sell firewood. How many cords do you want?

Q: Do you sell ice here? A: No, this is Asphalt and Paving Camp. The ice camp is out by the snow fence, disguised as a giant penguin. You can't miss it.

Q: Do you sell water? A: Yes, if you'll sit on this bag of ice for a while you'll have some nice water.
