Breaking news.........This just in......."watch out" for the latest Winchester Fantasy Padlock &
RAILROAD FANCY BACK padlocks.
Will do a follow-up later this week......The early stories told by the sellers are quite inventive.
Just wanted to get the WORD out!!!!
These NEW reproductions and Fantasy Padlocks are "JUST" now appearing in online auctions, local fleamarket, etc.
I do NOT know my Railroad locks when it comes to RARITY, etc... and other official marks to look for on the locks pictured below.
Please email me additional info so I can add that to this page. THANKS!!
#1) Winchester Railroad Lock Style with Winchester embossed on the Dust Cover. The backside is smooth with the same antique finish as the front. This..ONCE again is a Fantasy Items since Winchester NEVER produced that style of lock. CLICK HERE for a page from Frank Arnall's 6th edition that shows the KNOWN Winchester Padlocks. There is one more not shown and will try and find a picture of it.
A brief history on Winchester Padlocks...will be more specific when the Winchester Experts contact me.....and will add their info.....Winchester Padlocks were made for the Winchester Hardware Company by different lock companies. I believe it just depended on who had the contract those production years. Winchester Hardware competed with the KEEN KUTTER TOOL lines during that time period. I believe the locks date from the 1900s to the 1930s when Winchester quit their hardware line and of course continued making firearms to this day. As you can see, most of the locks were cheaply made. More to add later.
#2&3) The following Fancy Back Rail Road Padlocks are NEW FAKES. I guess we can call them fakes now since ORIGINAL LOCKS DO exist...I WELCOME more info on the lock companies so I can add a more accurate description and what to look for. From what I understand. The N&W lock is ONLY a $50 lock to begin with so WHY would they spend the effort copying this lock? I have seen some dates on this lock as late as 1950. N&W=Norfolk&Western Railway.
The C RR of NJ apparently is a RARE lock. I was told the initials stand for Central Rail Road of New Jersey. (Only 2 original examples known) It should be stamped FRAIM or U. L. & H Company.
The N.Y.S.&W stands for New York Susquehanna & Western. I'm not sure what other marks you should find on the shackles. I would think ALL the Fancy Backs should have a mark of some kind on the shackle or key. More info added later.
The Fantasy Winchester below has been in circulation for 12 -24 months +++
Here's one of the latest Frauds. The John Deere emblem was removed from some farm implement and applied to a $5 lock like they are using for the Fantasy Prison Locks..see "Fantasy Prison Locks" below. The logo appears to be from around 1937. Click on the logo link below to see the history. I would think this lock (being sold as the Real Deal) would be in violation of copyright laws. Especially since John Deere is still in business.
John Deere Logos through the ages
CLICK HERE TO SEE THE "FANTASY" PRISON/JAIL/FIREARMS PADLOCKS with BRASS TAGS. Let's stamp out these cheap imports. Some of the following names on the tags are... Leavenworth Prison, Alcatraz , San Quentin.....follow this link to see the rest. I will be adding some "authentic" prison padlocks in the near future. I would welcome any "REAL" pictures of American Prison locks and will give you credit on this page if so desired.
This is one of the latest Rail Road Fakes

New page on FAKE Santa Fe KK KeenKutter lock
Recently there have been a series of these locks being sold at Flea Markets and Online Auctions. From what I have read in past lock articles ,these locks were made in the late 1970s.The metal was chemically etched to make the patterns and letters. They are in NO WAY associated with the names on the locks. They are purely "FANTASY" locks. The ones I have seen are WINCHESTER ARMS, PAULY JAIL, and CUPRR (Central Union Pacific Railroad). I couldn't find those RR initials in Joseph Gross' book on Railroads of North America so I'm assuming that RAILROAD LINE is as BOGUS as the PADLOCK.
