John Worley, Sr. first appears in Chowan Precinct, NC, in 1704 where he is initially described as Captain John Worley. Although he quickly rises to positions of authority, nothing is known of his ancestry or how he came by the designation of Captain. The records show that he was a colorful character, showing up in Court both as a judge, and as a defendant. By 1727, he had been promoted to the rank of Colonel.
