TIMELINE for DANIEL and LUCINDA MORGAN

1797-1804: Grayson County, VA and Carter County, TN

William Morgan, brother of Daniel, appears in the Tax Lists for Grayson County, VA in 1797 to 1799.  He married Elizabeth Bobbitt there in 1799.  Daniel Morgan does not appear in the Tax Lists.  Instead, some researchers believe that our Daniel is listed in Carter County, TN in 1798.

In 1801, William Morgan appears in the Tax List for Knox County, KY.  A Daniel Morgan appears in the Grayson County Tax Lists in 1795 and from 1802 to 1804.  Some researchers do not believe that this Daniel is ours.  However, both could be true.  Perhaps Daniel moved to Carter County, TN and - as happened later - William gave Daniel his Grayson County residence.

During this period, Daniel married Lucinda and they had their first children.  However, the Census information for those children does not help resolve these questions.  The children almost universally state that they were born in either KY or NC - with no mention of TN or VA (although Carter County is near to both NC and VA).

Here are the Grayson County Personal Property Tax Lists (SLC FHL 2,024,555):

Sumner County, Tennessee and the War of 1812

In 1813, a Daniel Morgan enlists in the 2nd Tennessee Regiment of Volunteer Mounted Riflemen.  Some researchers think that our Daniel Morgan was living in Sumner County, TN and that this is our Daniel Morgan:

Pay Roll of a company of Volunteer Calvary commanded by Captain John Baskerville of the Regiment commanded by John Allcorn in the service of the United States from 24 September, 1813 to the 1st February, 1814.
John Baskerville, Capt.; John Lauderdale, 1st Lt.; Jesse Weaver, 2nd Lt.; Wm. Gwinn, Cornet; Moses Henry, Sgt.; Reubin Blackmore, Sgt.; Thadeus W. Barbour, Sgt.; Thos. Young, Sgt.; Wm. COLONEL JOHN ALCORN
DESIGNATION: 2nd Regiment of Volunteer Mounted Riflemen
DATES: September 1813 - December 1813
MEN MOSTLY FROM: Davidson, Rutherford, Sumner, and Wilson Counties (Winston's company from Madison County, Alabama)
CAPTAINS: John Baskerville, Richard Boyd, Thomas Bradley, John Byrne, Robert Jetton, William Locke, Alexander McKeen, Frederick Stump, Daniel Ross, John Winston
BRIEF HISTORY:
Colonel John Coffee commanded this regiment until the end of October 1813, when Coffee was promoted to Brigadier General. John Alcorn took over as colonel and the unit was incorporated with Colonel Newton Cannon's Mounted Riflemen to form the Second Regiment of Volunteer Mounted Riflemen. The Second Regiment, along with Colonel Robert Dyer's First Regiment of Volunteer Mounted Gunmen, formed the brigade under John Coffee. Muster rolls reveal that the regiment went by various designations besides volunteer mounted riflemen: volunteer cavalry; mounted militia; or mounted gunmen.
Many of the men from this unit were with Andrew Jackson on the expedition to Natchez (December 1812 - April 1813) and, consequently, felt their one-year's enlistment expired in December 1813. Jackson insisted that the time not spent in the field did not apply to the terms of enlistment. Hence, a dispute broke out between the troops and Jackson late in 1813. Most of the troops did leave by the end of that year, despite Jackson's strenuous efforts to keep them.
The regiment participated in the battles at Tallushatchee and Talladega (3 November and 9 November 1813) and muster rolls show that practically all of the companies sustained casualties, the most being in Captain John Byrne's company. The regiment's line of march took them from Fayetteville (where the regiment was mustered in), through Huntsville, Fort Deposit, Fort Strother, to the battles, and back the reverse way.

I have found no proof to confirm that this is our Daniel Morgan.

Knox and Whitley County, KY

Daniel first appears in the Tax List for Knox County, KY in 1815.  In 1818, this becomes part of Whitley County, KY.  William has been there since 1801.  Daniel appears to live in the same area with William and their neighbors from Grayson County.  Here are the records for that period:

Page 5, 6, and 7 are later lists of the property of Daniel Morgan Sale Bill. These sheets are much more faded but what I can see from the first of these 3 pages is that Allen Morgan, bought several items and Daniel Morgan Jr. Bought 3 pails. Several other people purchased things as well. Continued onto the next page (#230 at top of page), it looks like a Jarvis Morgan is mentioned again. Abner Morgan is mentioned on this page and I can hardly make it out but I think Daniel Morgan is mentioned again. On the last page (231 at the top of the page) Daniel is mentioned as buying 1 bed_____(?) Also on this page is Abner Morgan, and I think Andrew Morgan.

At the end of the list of buyers and goods is a statement, which reads:
I do certify that the foregoing presents a true list of the property that was sold of Daniel Morgan, Deceased signed
Griffin Morgan, Administrator

At the bottom of this last page it says:
