Daniel and Lucinda Morgan lived in Whitley County, Kentucky from about
1820 to 1850. They left a large family and many descendants. However, like many
of their time, their origins are shrouded in mystery. Lucinda is rumored to have been
Cherokee. Even less is known of Daniel Morgan. In all likelihood, he was of
Welsh descent - given that he named his son Griffin. Many Welsh laborers emigrated to
America in the mid-1700s to work in the lead mines.
Daniel lived near Mill Creek, south of the Cumberland River.
Daniel had a brother William, who came from Grayson County, Virginia and who later moved to Illinois.
There is some question whether Daniel also previously lived in Grayson County or in Tennessee.
They appear to have both been born in North Carolina - possibly Edgecombe or Nash County.
Although Daniel did not
own a lot of property, he appeared to have been well-respected. Almost immediately
after he arrived in Whitley County, the Court appointed him surveyor of a road between the
Rockcastle and Laurel Rivers, with responsibility for keeping the road in good repair.

Daniel Morgan lived in Whitley County near Mill Creek, south of
the Cumberland River. The land to the north of the Cumberland River and to the
east of the Rockcastle River was formerly part of Whitley County and is now part of
Laurel County. Daniel was responsible for surveying
and maintaining the road between Barnes Ferry (at the mouth of the
Rockcastle River) and Sextons Ferry (at the mouth of the Laurel River). This road may
have included part of the current road 3497. |
