| Who Was the Wife of Christoffe Du Breuil? |

Marianne |

From the birth record of Anthony Dibrell, we know that the wife of Christoffe du Breuil was named Marianne. However, the last name remains a mystery. My current choice is Marianne du Bonnet. |

Marianne Du Toit |

The most popular candidate for the wife of Anthony Dibrell is Marianne Dutoi. However, information in the "Huguenot Emigration to Virginia" essentially rules out this possibility. First, the reason for picking Marianne Dutoi is the birth record of Anthony Dibrell, which lists Elizabet Dutoi as his "grandmother". However, the mother of Marianne Dutoi is Barbara, not Elizabet. Second, by 1728, Marianne Dutoi should have been listed as Marianne du Brueil. However, Marianne Dutoi continues to be listed as such even after 1728, e.g.:
It is said that Marianne Dutoi also married John Lucadou, Jr in 1732 and James Goss in 1737. This is consistent with the records since a Marianne Loucadou appears in the records for 1733 and 1734 and a Marianne Goss appears in the records for 1738 and 1740. |

Marianne LeGrand |

Another candidate who is sometimes mentioned is Marianne LeGrand. If such a Marianne exists, she would have to be the daughter of Pierre LeGrand, since he appears to have been the only LeGrand in Manakin and since his children were born around the right time (i.e. aft 1682). However, to date, there is no evidence that he had a daughter Marianne. |

Marianne de Bonnet |

Another possibility (and my favorite) is Marianne de Bonnet, daughter of David de Bonnet and Jean Couturier. She is a sister of Ann de Bonnet, who married Francois Benin, and of Barbara de Bonnet, who married Pierre Dutoi. This would explain why Antoine Benin and Elizabet Dutoi were picked as the godparents of Anthony Dibrell, since they would have been cousins. However, records on Marianne de Bonnet have not been found. |
