On The Trail of - Colonel CHARLES COCKE

THE MYSTERY OF THE FIVE JESTERS

Jester Cocke is an unusual name. Yet, we have evidence of what appears to be 5 different Jester Cockes, who lived in Washington County, Virginia, Wayne County, Kentucky and then Clark County, Arkansas or Johnson County, Missouri. They also had a propensity for marrying women named Mary. Below is a side by side comparison of these Jesters.

There are others with the name Jester scattered in the family.  One  is Jester Cocke, son of John Cocke and grandson of Charles who lived in Madison County, Alabama and died in Monroe County, Mississippi in 1840.  The name Jester was passed on to his nephew, Jester Walls.  Another is John Jester Cocke, son of John Cocke and possible great-grandson of Charles, who lived in Clark County, Arkansas.

In addition to these related Jester Cockes, there are also some Jester Coxes.  These appear to be descendants of a family of Coxes from Pennsylvania.  In their case the Jester name was the name of a spouse.
