Charles Cocke may not have been the only Colonel in the Cocke family. There is evidence that he had a great-grandson Col. John B. Cocke, who commanded Cocke's 39th Arkansas Infantry Regiment, CSA The available information indicates that in 1862, Col. John B. Cocke was 28 years old, that he was born in Alabama and that he enlisted Monroe County, Arkansas. The same is true of John B. Cocke, who was born around 1835 in Alabama and was known to have been taken to Monroe County, Arkansas by his stepfather. John B. Cocke was the son of Jester Cocke and the grandson of John Cocke who was a likely son of Charles Cocke and Ellender Ewing. Not much is known about this regiment at this time. It was organized in June 4, 1862 and was named after a succession of commanding officers (Johnson, Hawthorn, Polk). With the appointment of Col. John B. Cocke, it became known as Cocke's Regiment. Col. John B. Cocke was cited for his bravery and was wounded at Helena on 4 Jul 1863. This caused him to be absent through Aug 1863. He was killed in battle in 1864. |
