On The Trail of - Colonel CHARLES COCKE

Mary Cocke
and Isaac Mullen
of Russell and Lee County, Virginia and
Wayne County, Kentucky and
Meschack Gregory
of Wayne County, Kentucky

Mary, the wife of Isaac Mullens is thought to be a daughter of Charles Cocke and Ellender Ewing. The names of their children support this theory, with a Charles, Jane and Elenor. Charles Cocke was also named the administrator of the Estate of Isaac Mullens and was the guardian of their children. (Unfortunately, although I have been told that Mary Mullens' maiden name was Cocke, I have been unable to verify this information.)

Assuming that both Mary and Jane are daughters of Charles and Ellender, it is my guess that she was born about 1773, which means that she was married to Isaac Mullen at the age of 16. Mary's mother Ellender Ewing probably did not move to Virginia until 1770, there probably would not have been enough time for her to meet Charles Cocke and give birth to Mary prior to the birth of Jane Cocke, which took place in 1772.

There is some evidence that Isaac Mullen, like John Lee Dibrell, is a descendant the Huguenots who settled in Manakin Town, Virginia around 1700. Another interrelationship is between William Stephens, who married Jane Cordelia Mullen, and Gabriel Chrisman, who married Jane Cocke. Both are descendants of the Germans who were among the first settlers of the Shenandoah Valley. And, as can be seen below, the Haven family is related to the Stephens family by marriage.  (Isaac Stephens and Rebecca Haven are also my ancestors.)

Isaac Mullen first appears in the records in 1792 where he is mentioned in a couple of unusual documents: The first is in 1792, where, at his request, Charles Cocke was appointed as his legal guardian. (This is particularly odd because it appears that, by this time, he was married to Mary Cocke and already had a 2 year old child.) The second is in 1794, where he is sued by his mother for support. (This may have marked the year of his 21st birthday, since in January 1794, he is first shown purchasing land.) He is also mentioned in connection with Charles Cocke in the 1792 Agreement to provide and provision a Militia for the State of Virginia.

Following the death of Isaac Mullens, Mary had a couple of children with Meschack Gregory. However, instead of marrying her, Meschack Gregory married Anne Beeson.

Sources and Links

I have recently received a huge amount of information from Martha Mullens Tutt, a descendant of Mary Cocke Mullens, who has written a book entitled "William Mullens, 1807-1895 of Wayne County, Kentucky. Although the book is out of print, she has sent me several pages from her book. These include a large number of interesting documents relating to Isaac Mullens, Charles Cocke and many others. It is safe to say that she has at least doubled the amount of information that has been gathered relating to Charles Cocke, including the Wayne County deeds which indicated that he had moved to Madison County, Kentucky. Needless to say, it is going to take a long time to sort through all the documents and to put them on the webpage in any semblance of order.
