| Jane
Cocke and Gabriel Chrisman of Russell and Lee Counties, Virginia and Wayne County, Kentucky |
Jane Cocke, a likely daughter of Charles Cocke and Ellender Ewing, married Gabriel Chrisman. This theory is supported by the names of their children, including Charles Chrisman and Campbell Ewing Chrisman. Also, Charles Cocke and Ellender Ewing named one of their children Charles Scott Cocke, possibly in honor of Jane Scott, mother of Gabriel Chrisman. Furthermore, like Charles and Ellender Cocke, Gabriel and Jane Chrisman lived in Lee County, Virginia and moved to Wayne County, Kentucky. (Unfortunately, I have been unable to verify that Jane's last name was Cocke. I had seen her referred to as Jane Cocke. I have also seen her referred to as a daughter of Charles and Ellender Cocke, by people who did not know who Charles and Ellender Cocke were. This indicates that there must be some kind of record of her last name- but, so far, it has eluded me.) The Chrismans are of German descent (Christmann) and were among the first settlers of the Shenandoah Valley and, later, Lee County. Many of the Chrismans appear to have moved to Wayne County, Kentucky around the same time as Charles Cocke. However, Gabriel and his brother Nimrod appear to have remained in Lee County, since they appear in the 1810 Personal Property Tax List. There are a number of interesting connections between Charles Cocke and the Chrisman family. The Rocky Station Fort, where Charles Cocke was stationed at during the Revolution, was formerly owned by Isaac Chrisman, Sr., Gabriel's father. Isaac Chrisman, Jr., Gabriel's brother, served as a Representative from Lee County in the Virginia House, along with Charles Cocke. Isaac Chrisman, Jr. was also married to Judith Wallen, a daughter of Thomas Wallen and Mary Cox. Thomas Wallen was a brother of Elisha Wallen, who organized the famous longhunts which Charles Cocke may have joined. Mary Cox may be a relative of Charles Cocke. The children of Jane Cocke and Gabriel Chrisman appear to have inherited their grandfather's wanderlust. Six of the twelve children moved to Missouri and three continued on to Oregon. The Chrisman children who moved to Missouri include Elijah, John, Gabriel, Abraham, Nimrod and Campbell Chrisman. The Chrisman children who continued on to Oregon include Joel, Isabel and Walker Chrisman. The second husband of Isabel was Isaac Crabtree, who moved to Oregon along with his siblings, John, Smyth, Job, Jr., and William. The Crabtree family had been in southwest Virginia for several years- several were longhunters; and one was responsible for starting an Indian war. The Crabtree family also married into the family of Jester Cocke. The Oregon families presumably had first moved to Missouri and then moved to Oregon via the Oregon Trail, which started in Missouri. |
