On The Trail of - Colonel CHARLES COCKE

Elizabeth Cocke and
Elijah Franklin of Wayne County, Ky. Madison County, Ala. and
Clark County, Ark.

Elizabeth Cocke, who married Elijah Franklin, was probably a daughter of Charles Cocke and Ellender Ewing.  They were married in Wayne County, Kentucky and, like Charles and Ellender, moved to both Madison County, Alabama and Clark County, Arkansas.  Charles Cocke sold land to Elijah Franklin in Clark County.

The theory that Elizabeth is the daughter of Charles is further supported by the fact of their naming one of their children Charles C(ocke?) Franklin.  (The sons were apparently named after their grandfathers.)  Also, Elizabeth's marriage bond is signed by G.W. Gibbs, a brother-in-law to her sister Ellender.  (Ellender married John Lee Dibrell.  John's sister Leanna married George Washington Gibbs, Sr.)

Interestingly, their daughter Amanda married Samuel C. Thornton, who might have been related to Sheriff Abner E. Thornton, who assisted in the arrest, trial and execution of her brother, Charles Scott Cocke.
