On The Trail of - Colonel CHARLES COCKE

Charles Scott Cocke of Wayne County, Kentucky and
Clark County, Arkansas

According to a History of Wayne County, Charles Scott Cocke was the youngest son of Charles Cocke. Like his father, he lived in both Wayne County, Kentucky and Clark County, Arkansas.

Charles Scott Cocke had a colorful life. He sued a man in Wayne County, Kentucky for accusing his wife of infidelity. He was put on trial, along with Samuel Gholson and another man, for rape and was successfully defended by Micah Taul. He was eventually convicted of murder in Clark County, Arkansas and executed. The newspaper accounts indicate that he was also thought to have murdered a man in Tennessee.

His middle name of "Scott" is given in a newspaper account of the murder trial. The name could have come from Jane Scott, the mother of Gabriel Chrisman, who married Jane Cocke, daughter of Charles Cocke and Ellender Ewing.

After Charles was executed, Nancy moved back to Wayne County, Kentucky.  In the 1840 Census, she appears two houses away from her brother-in-law, John L. Dibrell.
