On The Trail of - Colonel CHARLES COCKE

Benjamin Sharp and Col. John Sharp of
Lee County, VA

The Sharps had several dealings with Charles Cocke. Benjamin Sharp sold land to Charles Cocke, and their son, John Debow Sharp, was involved in the filing of his Petition for Revolutionary War Pension.

Sarah Sharp, a sister of Benjamin Sharp, and her husband Frances Berry were taken prisoner at the capture of Ruddles and Martins Forts in 1780.

Like Charles Cocke, Benjamin Sharp represented Lee County in the Virginia House of Representatives (1804-1806). John Debow Sharp is said to have been a lawyer. Like his father, he represented Lee County in the Virginia House (1814-1816). He also served in the Virginia Senate (1824-1828) and served in the 1861 Convention which resulted in the succession of Virginia from the Union.
