ART, and THE END
It's hopeless to try to show a representative sample
of the art, so here are a few things I happened to photograph while
driving the rickshaw.
THE MAUSOLEUM
The most amazing structure I've seen made from wood.
I was told by someone that the major panels are leftovers from a
manufacturer of puzzles or other wooden assemblies, and they look like
they might be. At night the space inside the mausoleum was much like a
cathedral, but with stars visible through the roof. This really did
seem like a sacred space. It was meant to be ephemeral, but I'm still
sad that it's gone.

THE WHAT? GUARDIANS?
ya gotta love the art cars. Where do they find all
this stuff, or does it just accrete like barnacles?

ROOTS
I particularly liked this piece which seemed to be
growing from the playa; taken from the ziggurat.

THE END
We left about 5:30 on Sunday, just in time to stop
in the mile-long line north of Gerlach due to a fatal accident to the
south. I was joking with my coworkers one day that at Burning Man we
choose one person randomly every year to be burned at the stake, but we
really have been randomly killing someone in traffic almost every year.
We talked to some people whom I gradually realized were local residents
about alternate routes. One of them was looking me over rather
carefully; maybe it was my remaining nail polish and general weird
appearance and behaviour. I sat on the van roof and watched the stars
come out for a few hours, and had a long conversation with another
burner about the history of celestial navigation. We saw the flare go
up for the mausoleum burn, but then the line moved on...
